Abrupt climate change as a rate-dependent cascading tipping point

چکیده

Abstract. We propose a conceptual model comprising cascade of tipping points as mechanism for past abrupt climate changes. In the model, changes in control parameter, which could instance be related to atmospheric circulation, induce sequential sea ice cover and ocean's meridional overturning circulation. The ocean component, represented by well-known Stommel box is shown display so-called rate-induced tipping. Here, an resurgence circulation induced before bifurcation point reached due fast rate change ice. Because multi-scale nature system, this type may also risk concerning future global warming. relatively short timescales involved make it challenging detect these from observations. However, with our we find that there can significant delay because system attracted stable manifold saddle during transition escaping towards undesired state. This opens up possibility early warning impending via detection changing linear stability vicinity saddle. To do so, estimating Jacobian noisy time series. useful generic precursor

Beyond the Tipping Point: Understanding Perceptions of Abrupt Climate Change and Their Implications

This article explores the influence of personal values and ontological beliefs on people’s perceptions of possible abrupt changes in the Earth’s climate system and on their climate change mitigation preferences. The authors focus on four key areas of risk perception: concern about abrupt climate change as distinct to climate change in general, the likelihood of abrupt climate changes, fears of ...

Abrupt climate change.

Large, abrupt, and widespread climate changes with major impacts have occurred repeatedly in the past, when the Earth system was forced across thresholds. Although abrupt climate changes can occur for many reasons, it is conceivable that human forcing of climate change is increasing the probability of large, abrupt events. Were such an event to recur, the economic and ecological impacts could b...

Change-point analysis as a tool to detect abrupt climate variations.

Recently, there have been an increasing number of studies using change-point methods to detect artificial or natural discontinuities and regime shifts in climate. However, a major drawback with most of the currently used change-point methods is the lack of flexibility (able to detect one specific type of shift under the assumption that the residuals are independent). As temporal variations in c...

Climate engineering and climate tipping-point scenarios

Many scientists fear that anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases have set the Earth on a path of significant, possibly catastrophic, changes. This includes the possibility of exceeding particular thresholds or tipping points in the climate system. In response, governments have proposed emissions reduction targets, but no agreement has been reached. These facts have led some scientists and ...

Abrupt change in climate and climate models

First, we review the evidence that abrupt climate changes have occurred in the past and then demonstrate that climate models have developing capacity to simulate many of these changes. In particular, the processes by which changes in the ocean circulation drive abrupt changes appear to be captured by climate models to a degree that is encouraging. The evidence that past changes in the ocean hav...
